US Active Duty Deaths 2001-2009

There is a common perception when it comes to military casualties, that deaths only occur in war. Thus, when the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan scale down, this book will not be needed.

Reality is much different. Line-of-duty deaths make up a significant percentage of military loss both during war and in times of peace.

An Honorable but Dangerous Job:  Since the days of colonial America, there have been those who have threatened our freedoms, values, and homeland.  America’s first citizens were attacked at home and abroad, and fought to protect their families, homes, and way of life.  It's no different today.   Just as in America’s early years, the job of protecting and defending America belongs mainly to the United States military.

The US military is comprised of hundreds of thousands of men and women, each of whom has volunteered to protect and defend America, and if need be, make the ultimate sacrifice in its defense. Realistically, every service member expects to live to a ripe old age. But, sometimes, life doesn’t turn out the way it's planned.

The Price of Freedom:  Life in a post-September 11th world brought frequent news of military deaths into American homes.  Across the country, somber military personnel in Class A uniforms knocked on thousands of doors, notifying distraught family members that their loved one had died in the line of duty. Some were killed by hostile fire in far-away lands; others died in terrorist attacks. Many military personnel were killed on training missions. Accidents, both on and off base, claimed lives, as did illnesses and diseases.  Suicides and homicides also took a number of military lives. With every military death, two things were certain: they died young and left behind a family that loved them.
